Background

Quebec’s Cultural and Creative Industries1 (CCIs) are recognized nationally and internationally for their accomplished artists, quality productions and leading-edge projects. In 2017, they generated an estimated $9.4 billion for the provincial economy and supported more than 100,000 jobs in Montreal alone. CCIs are primarily made up of small and medium businesses and self-employed workers. In Montreal, for example, 64% of CCI businesses are very small, with no more than 5 employees.

While CCIs are generally thriving, they face a number of challenges, including content globalization, technological advancements, fragile collaboration networks and, more recently, the introduction of new health standards which have disrupted their value chains. Furthermore, restricted gathering sizes and social distancing have raised questions about how they can interface with the public.

1 Cultural and Creative Industries are divided into 15 sub-sectors: architecture, design, communication, fashion, fine dining, tourism, cultural heritage, film/television, publishing, journalism and media, multimedia, video games, creative technologies, digital arts, and traditional performing and visual arts.

As part of Cooperathon 2020, La Piscine, an accelerator for creative and cultural entrepreneurs, is looking for ground-breaking solutions to help players in these industries and their partners to:

  1. Design new creative content, products, furnishings and services for safer work and leisure environments
  2. Develop new types of collaborative, multi-stakeholder platforms in order to rethink the production chain and the distribution of creative and cultural content
  3. Come up with new methods of sharing physical and digital content that will bring a new and improved experience to a wider audience despite restricted gathering sizes.
