Background

“We will remember spring 2020 for a very long time. All over the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has posed a severe threat to public health, weakened the economy and changed life as we knew it. It will leave behind deep scars, coupled with important lessons, such as the need to cooperate and think outside the box, like never before!

Québec has not been spared by the pandemic. Our customers and partners, large and small, have been badly shaken. Hydro-Québec will steadfastly fulfill the economic, social and environmental leadership role that people have come to expect of it. We will be a powerful driver of Québec’s economy and work tirelessly for the good of all Quebecers.”

– Sophie Brochu, CEO of Hydro-Québec,
2019 Sustainability Report

Many households in our society live in poverty, and the health crisis has only made matters worse. The figures show that the province of Quebec’s unemployment rate rose to 23.3% in May (Statistics Canada, 2020), with 821,000 jobs lost to the pandemic. Businesses and industries are now reinventing themselves and innovating to overcome shortfalls and strengthen the economy.

In the context of Cooperathon 2020 and as a leader in the energy, economic, social and environmental sectors, Hydro-Québec is encouraging participants to:

Find innovative solutions to help our society—and vulnerable people in particular—become more resilient.

In keeping with sustainability principles, participants are invited to develop new types of collaborations between people and organizations to foster the circular economy and circular energy. Here are just a few examples:

  • Reuse of energy and materials with a view to the circular economy to benefit a more resilient society
  • Design, optimization or integration of at least one social element to create sustainable value* for society while considering the most vulnerable among us
  • Operationalization of innovative approaches as processes and procedures to ensure businesses and individuals take advantage of clean energies.

Your project will help our society step up its resilience efforts and foster the advancement of the local economy, driven by clean, renewable and human energies.

* The creation of sustainable value is a sustainability concept aiming to increase an entity’s value from an economic standpoint while considering the entity’s current and future challenges and sustainable development principles.
